OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER

SMALL WORLD INTERNATIONAL MINISTRIES

Why We Started...

I know what it feels like to be the kid nobody expects anything from. I grew up poor — the kind of poor where the house gets foreclosed and your family ends up living in a 23-foot RV. In seventh grade I brought home straight D's and had to repeat the year. I sat between two classrooms, belonging to neither one. I know exactly what an invisible child feels like, because I was one. I also know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of a stranger's kindness. Years ago, when I was a struggling single father, a restaurant manager I'd barely spoken to pressed $2,500 in gift certificates into my hands — for my children's school supplies. I wouldn't take cash, but I took those certificates, and we went shopping for the kids together. I have never forgotten what that lifeline felt like. Someone saw my children, and decided they mattered.

That stayed with me. All my life, my deepest instinct has been to protect a child, whatever it costs me. My faith has always been simple — I talk to God the way I'd talk to a friend, and I believe love is something you do, not something you preach. Years later, I was living in the Philippines, traveling through the provinces, when I came to know a young woman — a high school senior with a dream of going to college. For her family, it was an impossible dream; there simply was no money. I paid her tuition myself. And I have never met her in person — not once. Hours of phone calls across the ocean made her like a daughter to me, and watching her come alive in college was like watching a light switch turn on — I watched that light carry her through her fourth year, toward her teacher's certification.

But she was one student. Everywhere I looked, there were more — bright, determined kids with no path forward, for no reason except poverty. I couldn't pay every tuition myself. So I started Small World International Ministries, so that no learner would be left behind for lack of means. Today that young woman serves on our Philippines team. The charity she inspired now puts school supplies in children's hands, food in their stomachs, and safe places to study within their reach.

I started this charity with my own paycheck — about $500 a week, nearly every dollar I earned. I can't keep doing it alone. That's the honest truth, and it's why I'm telling you this story. Every child deserves a chance. If you've ever been the overlooked kid — or the struggling parent lying awake at night wondering how you'll pay for school supplies — or the stranger who once decided a child mattered, then you already know why this work exists. You know what it feels like, because you've lived it.

So I'm asking you directly, person to person: reach into your heart. Reach into your emotions. Remember your past — and change somebody else's future. For the kid out there tonight who is exactly where we've been. Everyone has the power to change a life. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Here, a single dollar goes further than you can imagine — pencils, paper, a hot meal that keeps a child in school one more day. Every dollar adds up. Your five dollars and someone else's ten becomes a child's whole school year.

Your smallest gift could be the biggest thing that ever happens to them. Will you help us reach the next one?

Every meaningful journey begins with someone willing to believe in what is possible. The story of Small World International Ministries is a journey built around education, opportunity, and the belief that every student deserves the chance to pursue a brighter future. From the beginning, the mission has been about more than providing educational support. It is about walking alongside students throughout their educational journey, supporting them through challenges, celebrating their progress, and helping them recognize the potential within themselves. As the journey continues, every student supported and every educational opportunity created becomes part of a growing story of hope, growth, and transformation. Together, we are planting seeds of opportunity today that can grow into brighter tomorrows.

OUR STORY OF HOPE

Some dreams are born in difficult circumstances, but that does not make them any less worth pursuing. The story of Small World International Ministries is rooted in the journey of a young student who dreamed of a better future and believed that education could help her get there. Despite facing financial difficulties and the uncertainty that came with not always having enough resources for her education, she refused to give up on the future she imagined for herself. She continued to dream, continued to aim high, and held on to the hope that one day she could finish her education, find meaningful work, and build a better life.

Then, an opportunity came through Small World International Ministries. What may have seemed like a simple act of educational support became a life-changing opportunity for its First Scholar. The assistance she received helped ease a burden that could have stood in the way of her education and reminded her that her dreams were worth believing in. Small World International Ministries exists because there are children and students who have the desire to learn, the courage to dream, and the determination to build a better future, but may need someone to help them take the next step.

Today, the SWIM First Scholar is in her fourth year of college, continuing the journey she once only hoped would be possible. She is pursuing her education with the goal of building a meaningful career and becoming someone who can inspire others to believe in what is possible. Her journey is not simply a story of receiving support. It is a story of perseverance, opportunity, and what can happen when hope is given the chance to grow. Her story is also a reminder of why every donation matters. Behind every contribution is a student who may be wondering if their dreams are still possible. A school fee can keep a student enrolled. A uniform can help them walk into the classroom with confidence. Learning materials can help them continue their studies. And the support of a donor can remind a young person that they are not alone in pursuing the future they dream of.

The First Scholar’s journey continues, but her story has already become part of something greater. One student was given an opportunity to keep going, and that opportunity became a story of hope. Small World International Ministries hopes to give more students that same chance: to stay in school, to dream without limits, to overcome financial barriers, and to continue moving toward the future they deserve. When you support education, you are not simply giving to a student. You are helping protect a dream, open a door, and give hope a chance to become a future.

Julia Irish S. Pontioso holds the distinction of being the First Scholar of Small World International Ministries and currently serves as the Director of Social Media and Gathering. Her journey with the organization began through the educational support provided by Rev. William “Bill” Olsen, Pastor and Founder, who believed in her potential and invested in her education and future.

As a student pursuing a Bachelor of Physical Education and preparing for a career in teaching, Julia’s journey reflects the impact that educational support can have on a student’s life. Through the opportunities made possible by Small World International Ministries, she has been able to continue her education, develop her skills, and pursue her goal of becoming an educator.

As the organization’s First Scholar, Julia represents the purpose behind its mission: to create educational opportunities that can help students overcome financial barriers and pursue their dreams. Her experience serves as a reminder that investing in one student’s education can create a lasting impact that extends far beyond the classroom. In her role as Director of Social Media and Gathering, Julia also contributes to advancing the organization’s educational mission by helping share its story, connect with supporters, and communicate opportunities that can help more students access the education they deserve.

Her journey from First Scholar to an active leader within the organization reflects the lasting impact of investing in education and the potential of students to grow into individuals who can inspire and support future generations.
